How to Store Pallets Properly: Avoiding Damage and Waste

Proper pallet storage extends their lifespan, prevents safety hazards, and reduces replacement costs.

You invest in quality pallets. Don't let poor storage practices shorten their lifespan. How and where you store your pallets has a direct impact on their condition, safety, and useful life.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Storage

Indoor storage is ideal. Pallets stored inside are protected from rain, snow, UV radiation, and temperature extremes. They maintain consistent moisture content and avoid weather-related warping, mold, and deterioration.

Outdoor storage is often a practical necessity for businesses with limited indoor space. If you must store pallets outdoors:

Elevate stacks off bare ground using concrete blocks or sacrificial bottom pallets

Cover stacks with waterproof tarps, leaving air gaps for ventilation

Position stacks where drainage is good — never in standing water

Rotate your stock (first in, first out) to prevent long-term exposure

Stacking Guidelines

Empty pallets:

Stack no higher than 6 feet (approximately 15 pallets) for manual handling

Stack no higher than 15 feet when using forklifts, with stable base support

Keep stacks on level ground

Maintain clearance from walls for air circulation and fire access

Loaded pallets:

Follow your racking system's weight capacity ratings

Distribute weight evenly across the pallet

Use stretch wrap or banding to secure loads before stacking

Never stack loaded pallets more than two high without racking support

Moisture Management

Moisture is the number one enemy of wood pallets. It causes:

Mold and mildew growth

Wood swelling and warping

Accelerated nail corrosion

Weight gain (which affects shipping costs)

If pallets get wet, separate them and allow them to air dry before restacking. Don't wrap wet pallets in plastic — this traps moisture and accelerates mold growth.

Fire Safety

Dry wood pallets are highly flammable. Pallet fires are a significant risk in warehouse and yard environments.

Maintain at least 8 feet between pallet stacks and buildings

Keep stacks away from ignition sources (welding areas, electrical panels, etc.)

Have fire extinguishers accessible near pallet storage areas

Follow your local fire code for pallet storage limits and setbacks

Consider a sprinkler system in indoor pallet storage areas

Rotation and Inventory Management

First in, first out (FIFO) is the right approach for pallet storage. Pallets that sit for months deteriorate — even indoors. Moisture, insect activity, and simple gravity (the weight of pallets above compresses those below) all take their toll over time.

Mark incoming pallet shipments with a date and use the oldest stock first.

The Payoff

Good storage practices aren't glamorous, but they directly extend the life of your pallets, reduce replacement costs, prevent safety incidents, and keep your operation running smoothly. It's one of the easiest investments in operational efficiency you can make.
