Pallets for Small Businesses: Getting Started Without Overspending

Small businesses often overpay for pallets or struggle to find the right supply. Here's how to get started smart.

If you're a small business that's just starting to ship products on pallets — or looking to optimize an existing pallet operation — the pallet world can feel confusing. National suppliers have minimums you can't meet. Big box stores sell individual pallets at absurd markups. And Craigslist pallets are a gamble.

Here's a practical guide to getting started with pallets without breaking the bank.

Understand Your Needs

Before buying a single pallet, answer these questions:

How many pallets do you need per month? Even a rough estimate helps

What size? 48" x 40" GMA is the standard; make sure it works for your products

What grade? For shipping to customers, Grade A or B. For internal use, Grade C works fine

Do you need heat treatment? Only if you're shipping internationally

Will you get pallets back? This determines whether you should invest in quality (reusable) or economy (disposable)

Where to Source

Local Pallet Recyclers

This is usually the best option for small businesses. Local recyclers like Stockton Pallet Co. sell used pallets in quantities as small as a single truckload (typically 20-50 pallets). Pricing is competitive, delivery is fast, and you get graded, inspected pallets.

Pallet Exchanges

Some areas have pallet exchange programs where businesses swap pallets they don't need for ones they do. Check with your local chamber of commerce or industry associations.

Distribution Centers

Large distribution centers and retailers sometimes have surplus pallets they'll sell or give away. It's worth asking businesses near you if they have pallets they're looking to offload.

Avoid

Hardware stores: Pallet prices at retail are extremely marked up

Random Craigslist sellers: No quality guarantee, no consistency, potential contamination

Dumpster diving: Pallets behind businesses may be contaminated, treated with chemicals, or designated for recycling pickup

Right-Sizing Your Orders

Small businesses often make one of two mistakes:

22.

Buying too few at a time: Per-pallet cost and delivery cost per pallet are both higher for small orders. Try to order at least 20-30 pallets at a time

23.

Buying too many: If you don't have storage space, excess pallets just create clutter and deteriorate

The sweet spot for most small businesses is ordering a 1-2 month supply at a time.

Pallet Management on a Budget

You don't need fancy systems. For a small operation:

Count your pallets: Know what you have on hand (a whiteboard tally works)

Set a reorder point: When you're down to a week's supply, order more

Inspect before use: A 10-second visual check prevents shipping on a bad pallet

Stack properly: Don't leave pallets in the weather if you can avoid it

Saving Money

Buy used: Always. Unless you have a specific requirement for new pallets, used is the way to go

Sell your surplus: If you receive pallets with incoming shipments that you don't need, sell them to a recycler instead of throwing them away

Ask about delivery: Some suppliers offer free delivery above a minimum order quantity

Plan ahead: Avoid rush orders, which always cost more

Growing Your Program

As your business grows, your pallet needs will evolve. The habits you establish now — working with a reliable supplier, inspecting your pallets, tracking your inventory — scale up easily. A business that manages 50 pallets a month well will manage 500 pallets a month even better.

At Stockton Pallet Co., we work with businesses of all sizes. Whether you need 20 pallets or 2,000, we provide the same quality, service, and fair pricing.
